What Do Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans Cover?
Special Needs Plans provide the same coverage that all Medicare Advantage plans cover. Under this SNP, you have coverage for your hospital stays, doctor’s visits, prescription drugs, and other services that you need. Some SNPs may also cover additional services that are tailored to the specific group they are created to serve. However, if you qualify for SNP, you will want to review each plan to learn what services and benefits you will likely receive.
Types of Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans
This plan is categorized into three different categories based on your specific health needs. They are as follows:
Institutional Special Needs plans (I-SNPs): Institutional Special Needs plans are created for Medicare beneficiaries who live in some form of a medical institution (such as a nursing home or assisted living center) for 90 days or more. These plans are similar to C-SNPs but instead concentrate on providing coordinated care to Medicare beneficiaries who can no longer live independently.
Chronic Condition Special Needs plans (C-SNPs): C-SNPs are designed for people with disabling or severe chronic health conditions. To qualify for a C-SNP, you must have one or more of the following conditions:
- Autoimmune disorders
- Cardiovascular disease
- Cancer
- Alzheimer’s or Dementia
- Diabetes
- ESRD
- Hematologic disorders
- HIV or AIDS
- Chronic lung disorders
- Chronic or disabling mental illness
- Neurologic conditions
- Stroke
Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan (D-SNPs): D-SNPs offer extra coverage for beneficiaries who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare beneficiaries that qualify for the Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan have special healthcare needs due to both their medical needs and inability to pay for their health care.
Advantages of Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans
There are many advantages of signing up for Special Needs Plans since it is created to help those with specific needs. Some of the major benefits include:
- Prescription drug coverage: Since the plan covers prescription drugs, you won’t need to purchase a separate Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
- Care coordination: You are provided with a care coordinator who may be a health care team or primary care physician that will oversee your needs. This team will make sure you receive all of the treatments you need to treat or manage your condition.
- Additional coverage: As with other types of Medicare Advantage plans, SNP offers additional coverage not offered by Original Medicare, including vision, hearing, and dental care.
- Low cost: The costs for SNPs are quite low, especially if you qualify for the plan due to low income. For instance, there are limits on out-of-pocket costs, which cannot be found in Original Medicare.
