What Does Medicare Cover

When nearing Medicare eligibility, you need to be aware of the coverage that is provided by each part of Medicare. The four parts of Medicare include Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is one part of Original Medicare and covers:

  • Inpatient hospital care
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Home health care
  • Hospice care
  • Nursing home care

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is the other part of Original Medicare. It will cover:

  • Preventive services
  • Medically necessary services
  • Outpatient medical care
  • Limited outpatient drugs
  • Ambulance services
  • Clinical research
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Mental health care

By enrolling in both parts of Original Medicare, you will have coverage for all these services. While this may seem like a great deal of coverage to some Medicare beneficiaries, Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Here are some services that you won’t have coverage for with Original Medicare:

Medicare Part C

Once you are enrolled in Original Medicare, you will have the option of joining a Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) plan. Medicare Advantage plans are very similar in the sense that they must provide the same coverage as Original Medicare. However, they are also very different. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies, resulting in their costs to vary by plan and carrier.

Since they are offered by private insurance companies, they also have the option of adding on additional coverage benefits that cannot be provided with Original Medicare. These additional benefits can include:

  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Dental, vision, and hearing services
  • Fitness programs
  • Transportation for doctor visits
  • Services that promote your overall wellness and health
  • And more!

The additional benefits you may receive will depend on the Medicare Advantage plan you join and the insurance company.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D is the prescription drug coverage plan. You can have this as a standalone plan with Part A and/or Part B, or you can obtain prescription drug coverage through a Medicare Advantage plan that offers it.

Part D plans will cover at least two drugs in all categories, but they are also required to cover drugs in these specific categories:

  • Immunosuppressants
  • HIV/AIDS drugs
  • Antidepressants
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Anticancer
  • Antipsychotics
